After Finland gained independence from the Soviet Union in late 1917, control over Finland was devided between the Socialists, commonly known as "The Reds", and the Non-Socialists, commonly known as "The Whites". This dispute over control of Finland lead to the breakout of the Finnish Civil War in January 1918.

both sides had equal man strength but reds were badly disorganized. according to wikipedia most of their platoons were made of workers from different workplaces (like mills, factories, farms etc.) who decided together their leaders unlike whites who were actual trained soldiers and led by imperial russian army general mannerheim

The war is still going on in comments section.

Correction: the Soviet Union appeared only in 1922. In late 1917 it was a "Soviet Russia".

Interesting :) One question, I though Finland had a corridor to the Arctic sea?

I feel for this because some of my ancestors fought in Finland during this time.

Nice video. One correction though:
Soviet Union didn't exist in 1918. It was Soviet Russia

Awesome! Maybe you could do an alternate history cover for this for if the Reds won the war?

I am pretty sure Finland had a coast to the arctic sea, the land was called Petsamo.

Most people in the comment section assumed that everything communist is Russian and the Finnish Reds were Bolsheviks but in fact they were lead by the Finnish social democrats, independent of the Bolsheviks' leadership (who were also social democrats). The Bolsheviks supported them for the vision of a world revolution and a better external situation of Soviet Russia. Many people don't seem to realize Leninist communists were radical social democrats at the time. Some social democrats like the Norwegians actually joined the Comintern but later quit due to disagreement with Leninism.

I really don't understand why people hate the reds so much. They were just normal people fighting for what believed in, trying to make their country a better place. You can't blame them for that.
