How To Give An Amazing Speech Without Using Notes

Public speaking is terrifying. But at some point in your life, no matter how much you avoid it, you’re going to get called on to give a speech. It could be a presentation for work, a best man speech at a wedding, who knows. And if you can’t give it without notes, you’re at a huge disadvantage. Because not only does it come off as less authentic if you’re constantly referencing notes, but if the powerpoint breaks, you’re screwed.

This video is going to to teach you how I regularly talk for 10-20 minutes, with minimal memorization and how you can learn to public speak without any notes too.

0:32 - Outline your speech in memory friendly form
2:00 - Write out everything on paper (or computer)
2:43 - Subvocalize your speech without using visual cues
4:25 - Memorize the first and last sentences word for word

The fact that you made a 7 minutes video with ZERO cuts just goes to prove your point. Great video!

1. draft a memory friendly outline
2. write out entire speech under each heading
3. subvocalize the speech without referencing visual cues
4. memorize the first and last sentence word for word

Used these tips on my channel when recording and it helps a TON! Also running through it 2-3 times and connecting it to stories that help 'prime' my memory makes it really easy to recall. Thanks Charlie!

I noticed this when I was taking a communications class in college, everyone who goes up to give a speech without notes did just fine in remembering what to say, without memorizing. Everyone who brought notes, ending up reading from the notes. It really isn't that bad, if you run through a speech a few times you will remember everything. If in doubt, have only key words from the bullet point and that is it. Taking notes up, is just shooting yourself in the foot.

I can honestly say without a doubt this my top favorite channel always sharing and referencing your videos to my friends.

I can't stress this enough. NEVER put the words that you're planning on saying in your PowerPoint. It makes you look like you don't know what you're talking about and the audience isn't engaged, because they get the " Oh he's reading it to us, " idea. I've seen so many presentations and this is what ruins all of them.

Another Tip: Always que the ending with "Thank you, " if you are presenting a talk where you need people to clap at the end. It's an easy que that everyone understands. Saying "That's it, " or "I'm done, " makes it seem like you're not confident.

I’ve struggled with presentations for almost 30 years. Had one last week with three VPs and nailed it using your advice! Cannot thank you enough!

How to start a conversation. How to be "socially active". What to speak about when you're around different people.

I'd like to see a video on how to add humour to a speech.

Basically a video about how you manage to speak through your videos. You're telling the know-how as you're doing the thing itself! And in a natural way, because that's your normal way of doing it. Amazing

It was extremely helpful to hear about subvocalization. I had never heard that as a strategy. Also, the tip to memorize the first and last sentences of the presentation will also be a game changer for me.

I would enjoy a video about tone. Your videos are interesting not only because of content, but because of your vocal flow. Your delivery is charismatic in a very authentic way.

THIS is what I share with my gavel club members! They can totally relate to you. You keep them engaged. I'm a gavel club advisor (a Toastmasters program) which has 34 teens and you help me reinforce the "no notes" concept with this video. Thank you for also demonstrating how to keep your audience focused on YOU by using facial expression, body language and vocal variety. BRAVO! :-D
