Black sand and gravel is also less stressful for the fish - most do not like bright or light colored bottom. Also, most fish will have better color. Bright bottoms will make a lot of fish try to fade their color to match the lighter bottom.

I try to pick substrates that blend with diatoms to make that new tank phase a little easier to look at.

Mixed colors are even better at hiding the detritus. A blend of dark grays, browns, black. It always looks the same. Not as striking as a solid black or white but it does stay neat.

I use light colored sand. Looks fine. The mulm just gives it character and accentuates the ripples in the sand. #ihategravel

I wish I saw this a few months ago. I had a "brilliant" plan and used a white sand substrate. I have snails along with my fish .. poop machines. 😅
