I'm just about old enough to remember the impact that "Dancing Queen" had when it was originally released, in 1976. I grew up with ABBA - "Arrival", which contains this track, was the first album I bought, with a record token given to me on my 13th birthday. Cutting to the chase - what I really like about this is its faithfulness to the vocal harmonies in the original, and a re-instrumentation that keeps most of the original hooks, yet is still radically different to the original. In my view, there is no point in covering a song if nothing is added by the cover - this adds something that I never thought, 46 years later, was there, which is a massive achievement.

This track, at the time, marked a huge ramp-up in ABBA's use of the potential of the studio, and simultaneously in production values. I have to say that this was never my favourite ABBA track, but in terms of those values, only "SOS", of the previous back-catalogue, comes close to it. "SOS" is a belter of a song - a punk version was done in about 1978...don't ask me by whom, as far as I recall it wasn't all that good, but it's crying out for a rock makeover. The trouble is that, while America initially took more kindly to the post-"Waterloo" single releases than the UK did, "SOS" made the lower end of the Hot 100 top 20, whereas here, it was the first big hit after Waterloo (#6 in 1975), so it wouldn't be as well known there.

As the leader of the band at my brother's wedding said of "Dancing Queen", when I asked them to play it so that I could sing my own lyrics to it, "Are you sure? It's a very difficult song to sing, you know. Do you know what key you want it in?" My answer to this egregious patronage was, "I'd like the original key, please, and it's a song I know like the back of my hand, so yes, thanks for your concern, I know that it's a very tricky melody". But you guys have nailed it - that combination of a split and two-part delivery of the melody is the key to what gives this version the added momentum that it needs in a rock interpretation.

"SOS". Please..! Or, if not, I dare you to do "Left to My Own Devices" by the Pet Shop Boys...I think that might be a challenge.

I've always wanted to hear ABBA songs played in this style, they just lend themselves to be rocked up! Great job!

You guys crushed it! This was my mother's favorite song. It will forever be engrained in me. When she passed away in 2019, I performed an acoustic version at her funeral. I wish she was here to see this. Trevor screaming the chorus seriously brought me to tears.

*LYRICS*

[Intro]
You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene
Digging the dancing queen

[Verse 1]
Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music, getting in the swing
You come to look for a king
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music's high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance

[Chorus]
You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen
Feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene
Digging the dancing queen

[Verse 2]
You're a teaser, you turn 'em on
Leave 'em burning and then you're gone
Looking out for another, anyone will do
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance

[Chorus]
You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen
Feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
You can dance, you can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene
Digging the dancing queen

[Outro]
Digging the dancing queen
Digging the dancing queen

This is such a random choice but somehow it was also the perfect choice. A masterpiece recreated by amazing artists is just a re-invented masterpiece. Love this lol
