Thank you for introducing this wonderful Sibelius work to the world here on YouTube where all music can be brought into a great audio library for all on the planet to hear. What an audience it has now! A magnificent work!

This music almost 130 years old was WAY ahead of its time. 2:00 to 8:30 and 17:25 to end is just unreal

Viktor Rydberg's "Skograet" poem in translation:

He, Björn, was a strong and handsome lad
with broad, huge shoulders
and a tighter waist than other men -
that's how they tease snowy hulders.
To the party he went on an autumnal evening,
when the moon shone over spruce and heath,
and the wind blew
hi and ho
over bog and forest,
through hollow and mo;
then he was enchanted in his mind,
he looks at the forest and has no rest,
he looks at the sky,
but practice they wave and nod,
and the stars twinkle and look:
enter, enter, enter the wining firumo!

He goes, he obeys the dark commandment,
he does it willingly and forced;
but the dwarves of the forest in jet-black robes,
they go cunningly in the heather
and tie a net of the moon's light
and the shadow of swaying twig and branch,
a swaying net
in rice and thickets
behind the walker's leg,
where he goes,
and then laugh at the prisoner .
In the hides, wolves wake and laugh,
but Björn he dreams by the song,
which sounds and whispers around from the furrows
, entices and invites:
go deeper, deeper into wandering enigmatic mo!

Now suddenly the whistling wind dies down,
and the night is pleasant in summer,
and sweet-smelling vapors from the flowering linden
by the sleeping waters of the pond.
In the shadow a rustling sound is heard:
there waves a scythe, a moon-white screw,
there waves an arm
so dandruff and round,
there raises a bosom,
there whispers a mouth,
there sink two eyes into yours
and play so blue an eternal faith,
that all memories delay;
they invite you to numb and forget,
they invite you to fall asleep and dream
älskogro in hissing soporific furumo.

But he, whose heart a forest raw steals,
never gets it back again:
to dreams in moonlight his soul leans,
he cannot love a spouse.
Those eyes so blue in the nocturnal forest
have drawn his heart from the harrow and plough,
he cannot smile
and rejoice as before,
and the years they look
around his door,
but find no child or flower;
he wretchedly grows old in a deserted nest,
around the hearth the seats are empty,
and if he waits for some of the years,
he awaits death and the coffin,
he listens with incurable woe to the rustling of the furumo.

Sublime !

Sibelius can do no wrong for me, musically anyway. What a delight this music is superbly played by the Lahti band under the direction of the old hand. A great choice youtube.

Vedo che a quattro persone non è piaciuta questa esecuzione e quest'opera del grande Sibelius e l'eccellente esecuzione di Kamu. Mi domando e mi chiedo cosa abbiano ascoltato, forse molto distrattamente... . Saluti.

Another work by the master that disappeared until recently. Similarly "Kullervo", first recording I believe was in the 1970's, and yet for me his greatest composition and certainly among my top 5 favourite works of all time.

If Sibelius is not yet ensconced in the Pantheon of First Rate Composers, he most definitely OUGHT TO BE! I'm still discovering pieces I've never heard before, and each one of them is outstanding. Thanks to the Sinfonia Lahti and to BasileuskaiAutokratorRhmaion.

The Lahti Symphony orchestra have got this piece down to a T. Infact, this orchestra play Sibelius best of all. In my humble opinion.

What a fine work this is! Great performance and recording. I suppose it's not heard so often (if at all) in our concert halls because there are not many conductors who can really bring it off as the composer wished. The orchestration is amazing .The opening pages are typical Sibelius from his early years and the last 5 minutes are really majestic and overwhelming !

It's the sound of his Kullervo symphony, dark and melancholic.

This is really a very fantastic piece! Today is Sibelius' 150th anniversary and his work is already canonized for the eternity! For the people whose music is a crucial part of their lives!

Early Sibelius, Middle Sibelius, Late Sibelius. It's all Sibelius, and it's all good. Better than no Sibelius, right? Each period had its own unique appeal. I hope whatever old scores he burned were nothing as impressive as this. I'd hate to think what might have been lost to the flames.
