VA was one of the last states to desegregate their public schools. After Brown versus Board was passed in 1954, many states were slow to desegregate.

Where I grew up in southwest VA, schools did desegregate until 1968. Some areas took longer. This was after the Civil Rights Laws of 1964. VA's state government used "Passive Resistance" to refuse integration of public schools.

The federal government passed more laws refusing federal aid to states who did not comply. VA cities and counties fought back by shutting down public schools. Private schools shot up all over the place for white students. Busing of black students helped to increase the private school enrollment. White children were not bused, and their neighborhood schools were not closed. It was the complete opposite treatment of black schools and students. There were few exceptions.

Black students who could not live with relatives in other cities or counties did not finish their education. Poor counties like Prince Edward were extremely cruel. That area was/is mostly farm land. Blacks who lived their had to struggle to make a living. They could not spare their children to live elsewhere. They had to help out with the farms.

The Quakers in Pennsylvania stepped in and took black children into their homes. The children lived in PA during the school year and came home in the summers.

VA has always had rocky and sketchy race relations. After all, of the three capital cities of the Confederate States, VA had two, Richmond and Danville.

I was taught growing up you have to be twice as good work twice as hard to get a third of the way as white folks so that mean you have to be three times better to get a fraction of the way sadly that still rings true to this day despite what they tell you
