Timed Essay Strategies

Welcome to the first video of my back-to-school series! This August, I will be posting study tips and videos to prep you for school writing assignments. We all know the dreaded timed essay...whether you're writing for a summer reading essay or an AP exam, the strategies in this video will show you how to manage your time and ace your assignment! I'll walk you through the four steps of writing a timed essay and the amount of time you should devote to each step. This tutorial will also show you a real example of how I would plan an essay on a specific topic.

At the present time, I am taking a teacher certification exam ELA writing, which involves writing an essay on a piece of literature or a poem. I have not studied this subject in over 40 years. Your videos along with other sources have helped me organize my thoughts and given me some strategies to approach the exam.

Do you have any tips on timed writing for writing stories rather then essays? I have a contest coming up an basically the premise is that the organizers will give us a page of information and based off of that we have to create an original story. Usually I can write decently fast but my concern is coming up with the idea/plot. Do you have any tips on how to come up with those really fast?
