The Grow Your Own Food movement is gaining momentum worldwide as people like us are taking more control over what we eat. Our journey to self-sufficiency led us to a rural property away from the city we lived in for decades.

Food prices regularly increase, especially during winter months when most fresh produce is imported. Unfortunately, food choices are often limited, and finding nutritional organically-grown produce isn’t always possible in many parts of the world.

We live in a cold climate (Zone 3) in Northwestern Ontario, and our growing season is less than 100 days. We really don’t have much time to grow a wide variety of produce, so we rely on row covers, low tunnels, high tunnels and greenhouses to extend the growing season in the spring and autumn.

Having a greenhouse to grow our own food is part of our sustainability and food security plan, and you can build the one shown here using only basic tools and parts for a tenth the price of a commercially available unit.
