I feel like it would have made more sense if Stephen was, in fact, originally catatonic, but recovered. When he realized he could essentially have his step-mother's attention all to himself because of his condition, he continued to act like he was still catatonic. For me, that would have made more sense.

Most criticism here is valid. However, Mary did attempt to lock Steven in the basement and it was clear that the last thing she wanted to do was kill him, as she had knocked him unconscious or tried to escape three to four times before eventually killing him (as he was drowning a child...). Remember, she initially knocked Steven out and locked the basement door only to have him use an axe to break out. That's the one thing that I feel like was misrepresented or overlooked in this review.

there is no way u can fake being catatonic, unless the hospital they used is literally the worst ever, also this kid was obsessed and she was hand bathing him...ur telling me he didnt get even a bit aroused

Nothing to do with the actual plot of the movie, but I have so much respect for people who take care of people or loved ones who cannot do it for themselves (the non-abusive caretakers, of course). It's a full-time responsibility and takes a special type of patience and selflessness. Kudos!

You forget the part where the admitted to killing his dad on purpose the day of the car accident. This guy was already homicidal, and the mom had already lost her son.
