im coming back to this song after hearing the clip of james talking about the meaning of car lights, and i honestly feel stupid for not understanding it was about him liking a guy sooner. this song is so incredibly vulnerable and im so proud of him for writing about such a hard thing to deal with at a young age. its so surreal hearing songs like these that mirror my experiences of as well, and this song is even more special to me now. thank you james

1 year ago i was supposed to get married to my fiance...ended horribly. I was very mentally abusive as much as she was physically. 7 years gone down the drain. The lyrics " I hate what your doing, i hate that it feels so right." Means alot. This girl was my gay awakening, just to find out it was all toxic to us. 2 months before our original wedding date she moved out. This song makes me cry so damn hard. Reminds me of our story. This song is fucking incredible. It does such a great job walking though the fear and excitement of a gay relationship. In my younger years I tried to force myself to date men and it never felt right. When I had my first hook up with a woman everything clicked. “I feel like I’m falling for someone” I’d such a wonderfully vulnerable line. I felt like I’d never fall for anyone but I did and she’s incredible.

Don't read this unless you're interested (Or you're James himself) because I just want to let out how much this song means to me. In April of this year, I discovered this song and thought it was really awesome. Then, shortly after, my girlfriend broke up with me. I won't go into details for obvious reasons, but I will say that I loved her, so much, more than anything, and that she was my best friend. I haven't been able to listen to this song without shedding a tear ever since.

Obviously, the story behind the song and my experience are vastly different situations, but I can relate to a lot of the lyrics. "Just lay your mind on my chest" and "I could answer your troubles if you let me in" only convey a fraction of the longing I feel. While I don't "feel like I’m falling for someone else", I'm so terrified that the numbness to everything else will eventually consume my feelings, memories, and longing for her. I don't want to forget the love or the heartbreak, I want us to live on.

For the final part of this gut spill, I always misheard "YOU CAN HOLD MY HAND IN A CROWDED PLACE" for " YOU BROKE MY HEART IN A CROWDED PLACE" (Go back and listen it sounds sooo similar), and now it has a double meaning for me. She quite literal dumped me in public, and the "BUT JUST HOLD ME CLOSE AND HOPE THAT THEY DON'T SEE MY FACE" line relates to my thoughts of never being good enough for anybody in all aspects, like looks, or just as a person in general. My new interpretation is less hard on myself, but is quite solemn. The original lyric, "YOU CAN HOLD MY HAND IN A CROWDED PLACE" is a perfect visual representation of what happens when my anxiety hits. Let's say, I'm getting anxious in a large group of people, and I can just close my eyes and she's right there, leading me through. Also, whenever I need a hug because I'm about to break down and cry, I can close my eyes and she can "hold me close" and no one can "see my face" as tears run down it. I assure you I'm not crazy, they just give me these little moments of peace.

James, please keep making these beautiful works of art. Car Lights isn't the only one I can deeply connect with, and I'm sure many others will agree with me. To whomever may have read this, safe travels, have a good day :)
