In view of the recent #novelcoronavirus, here’s how you can get your strong-willed children to wash their hands WITH SOAP 🧼 ⁣
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⁣⁣
👉🏻 Do the simple pepper and soap science experiment! Your kids will see for themselves, how soap repels the pepper “germs”. Seeing is believing! 👀
⁣⁣ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⁣⁣
🧫 When you dip soap into pepper, the soap lowers the surface tension of the water. Since pepper is hydrophobic (repels water), the light pepper particles scatter away when the soap breaks the bonds between water molecules.
⁣⁣ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⁣⁣
Some tips:
⁣⁣ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⁣⁣
〰️Prepare 2 set ups of water: Water only (control) and water + soap. Encourage your child to observe the difference.
⁣⁣ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⁣⁣
〰️Explain that the pepper represents “germs”, and the scattering of pepper illustrates how soap removes the germs from our hands, as compared to just washing our hands with water only.
⁣⁣ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⁣⁣
〰️Ask guiding questions to stimulate critical thinking. I use the 6 steps of scientific method to facilitate the discussion with D. #teachermom 😆
⁣⁣ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⁣⁣
〰️My kids were too excited and went overboard with the pepper. For best results, less is more. Watch the video to see how much pepper we used.
⁣⁣ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⁣⁣
〰️Use a tray to collect any spillage! Prepare wet wipes, lots of them!😅
⁣⁣ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⁣⁣
Try this, your kids will be amazed! More STEM activities on my blog 🧪
