Practical Kata Bunkai: Two-Person Passai / Bassai-Dai Drill

This short video was filmed at a seminar in Kansas in June 2014. It shows a two-person drill for all the primary applications of Bassai-Dai / Passai; in the order they are presented by the kata. The purpose of such a drill is to permit time efficient practise of the bunkai and to give a direct two-person complement to the solo form of the kata. Such drills are a small part of the overall methodology however; and they are certainly not a substitute for the practise of individual techniques in complaint and non-compliant drills.

The drill shown took two days to teach to a group of experienced karateka and this short clip can in no way capture all the details or give a full explanation. This should therefore not be mistaken to be an instructional clip. It should also be accepted that all the nuances of the drill may be unclear to viewers who were not there. We nevertheless hope that the clip is of interest.

All the best,

Iain
