The events of this movie are really occuring in "real time", but the characters don't perceive them as such, because they're unaware of the fact that they're coming back to this beach every few years. There are a few hints that the trailer gives us. People tend to "pass out" when they walk back through the cave. This really means that they "pass out" from the experience they've just had at the beach, but somehow they're always tempted to return to the beach. Another hint we get is the fact that they're wearing different clothes and - quite obviously - that they're getting older.
