That looks a lot more linear than using a bell crank. I know it's all just plastic, but would roller bearings in a track make this much smoother? I'm thinking that the force applied at the ends of the range of motion would have angular force creating friction on the sides of the moving slugs (?) as it is divided between the moving slugs and the stationary pin.
(I'm turning 50 and I've always wanted to get into some robotics and physics-related real-world stuff, so I'm trying to figure out how to start out. I had a rudimentary physics class in the Navy in the 90's and realized that I missed out.)
