Once in a decade? I looked into container-shipping in 2020, but was worried because it seemed to good to be true. Plus, I was fully invested (mainly) in tankers so I wasn't motivated to look deep into containers - so I lost out on that one.

I did mention the coming tanker boom on your research platform though, but people didn't seem to be interested in the "once in a decade" for tankers. Maybe in a year or two? (might still not be too late by then)

I still haven't looked into containers, so this might not apply enough for containers (given the huge orderbook) but two things;
1) There is currently a two-tier marked for ships. This is so strong that my favourite tanker--company made (a tiny) net profit in 2021 which was THE worst (by far) rates in history (ever). This is a crucial element to consider in shipping now - and this tier-market will just become stronger the next few years as the EEXI/CII-regulations now finally are starting to bite
2) Asset value in shipping is utterly useless. For instance; if you bought a ship at the peak in 2008, then your (remaining) asset price for that ship - in 2013 - would probably be higher than an identical, but brand new ship... The companies "never" adjust their asset prices to reflect actual asset/market prices in their books

Excellent video Sven. It says that the company has been in business since 1953. It that just marketing? Surely there has been down periods since 1953 where the liquidated the company ?

Hi Sven,
why don't you have a look at Kering SA? strong fondamentals, great luxury brands, family owned business, fairly priced at these leveles. would you mind to consider it in one of your next videos? best regards

Thank you for your analysis! Very helpful. I was thinking of selling puts for the begining of 2025 but after seeing this video, I'll stay put! :)

What are your thoughts on VLCCs. They seem to be on the very under ordered part of the cycle. Would that not be the time to buy companies within the shipping cycle?

I follow shipping stocks and container ships are no go now, the boom in ordering couple of years ago was really value destroying. Liners like Zim wont make meaningful money for years and they are priced too expensive for their earnings potential. There are not fat pitches in shipping now in my opinion. Maybe SFL, Stolt and some dry bulkers or off shore drillers if you can wait few years are fairly priced but nothing easy. Most are expensive.

What i would disagree with you is that does this sector fit for small investors. Its pretty much the best there is for small investor in my opinion! These companies are simple: you know where the money comes and where it goes, you know what are the assets and their worth. Ordering books are not secret and valuations are easy to determine. Liquidity is bad, companies are small, moves are fast - big investors cant come here - we small people can come and go!

brilliant piece. clear that buying small shipping companies is a bad plan. can be useful to follow them as another indication of the business cycle.

Nice. bought 1000 shares @6.80 Will add more @ under 5. Sit and wait and then ride the wave when it comes again;) might take many years, and be ugly along the way.

I'd be very interested to hear your take on Nippon Yusen - While my ZIM stock has been getting absolutely destroyed, my Nippon Yusen stock has been doing well, and the price is up 43% over the last year, and the P/E is still only 2.3! Net income margin was 39% LFY, although this has thinned to 18% on a TTM basis. They're also paying a 4.8% dividend on top.
Am I on to a good one here? Or can I expect Nippon Yusen to also go the way of ZIM?

Hi, great video as usual! I have a question. What do you think of tanker sector? They are in a good cycle at the moment and possibly postioned for even greater cycle in the future. Companies like Frontline for an example

Hello Sven. What is your takeaway on $BABA (AliBaba) company? I’ve seen your video around it from some time ago, is your perspective around it still the same?

Love to see it thanks man! Please cover AQST stock if you get time. They have price targets of $12, 16 and 24 now which is a little crazy. Maybe it can hit $6 again. It was at $6.40 then they got rejected for libervant in 2021 and now it looks like it will be approved in a few months

Right now all shipping costs are very cheap.
Just for reference: Maersk from Europe to China is so cheap, that local trucking costs are significantly higher!
Plus a big factor; less goods are being imported and expored as consumer crisis is getting bigger.
That's why there is incentive to keep prices low, to try to move as many goods as possible.
You could discuss how the ports are doing Sven (Luka Koper, Trieste, Rijeka, northen ports? ) would be interesting to hear your thoughts

Hi Sven,
How about Clarkson? I think it's a great risk/reward at the moment. And a plus for them is that they steadily grow their dividend, independently of the cycle.
