This is a full tour of a super innovative net zero tiny house that is 100% solar powered! It has a roof made of integrated solar panels and an atmospheric water generator prototype. It’s insulated with vacuum insulated panels, it has a home automation system, a sliding loft, and more!

The Northern Nomad tiny home was designed and built by a group of students from Carleton University. In this video, we’re meeting up with the professor and 4 students who worked on this high tech green building project to get a full tour, and find out more.

I think they should have someone live in it for their research because cooking and breathing will both affect moisture in the air. The empty house is not a good gauge of how it will really perform. I love what they have done though and hope each of these students continues in the field of tiny dwellings.

Wow, even the red car at 02:59 was like I got to go back and check this place out!

Vacuum insulation is the future, we use it a lot in Germany, could never understand why tiny-house-builders in the US don´t use it extensively, since it saves a lot of room! The Panel he shows is just a show-piece or design-flawed, since such panels have to have overlapping flaps on 2 out of 4 sides, to eliminate heat-bridges!!!

I love all the technology. The one thing that's almost always lacking is comfortable seating.

What an amazing structure. I hope houses like these become more commonplace. Projects like these are so important because they show us that off grid living is possible and if planned correctly, rather practical. 💘

What is it with all the negative comments on tiny houses lately? This home is a proof of construction concept! If tinies are not for you move on to videos of mcmansions. (Which is not exploring alternatives BTW that would be perpetuating the status quo!)
I think this tiny is exploring some interesting ideas. Thank you Matt and Danielle, for sharing this home with us!

This is the kind of experimentation that is needed to keep the Tiny House movement going forward. Combine this with some brilliant DIY storage solutions that have been developed, and we may have an answer for home ownership on a budget in high cost areas.

Really nice. I'm looking forward to hearing how the heating system worked during an Ottawa winter. 👍🙂

Love that sliding loft! Very cool & outside the box

Very clever insulation design. But they should think storage solution for more practical usage. I understand it's just a project and they will monitor the practical execution of their theoretical concepts. Good luck to them! 👍🏻

That movable loft is absolutely brilliant. A stairway/storage wall can be built... WOW WOW WOW!!!

That's a complicated way of living simply. The learning curve needed to live in this house is quite high which may induce a market barrier for potential buyers. Though it's amazing to explore new technologies to achieve relative comfort, I think it would be a hell of work should the internet go down in this house for a few days.

I realize this is a research project, but did you think of a practical way to reach the loft?

Net Zero and Passive House construction techniques are the future. Saving energy saves money on utilities.
Air sealing, great insulation, super efficient heating and air conditioning, LED lighting systems, Triple pane windows and European style triple seal doors, Solar panels with battery storage and an electric vehicle charger in the garage. Air sealing and blower door testing is an under appreciated energy saver.
