Max Verstappen’s fighting victory in Formula 1’s Miami Grand Prix on an alternate strategy to team-mate Sergio Perez takes centre stage in the latest episode of The Race F1 Podcast.
Scott Mitchell-Malm and and Mark Hughes join host Edd Straw to discuss the headlines from the weekend, leading off on Miami GP’s pre-race spectacle that proved divisive and how F1’s two 2023 title protagonists stacked up this weekend.
There’s a look at Verstappen’s initial charge that set up the win, and at the implications of Perez failing to convert pole into 25 points in these specific circumstances.
Charles Leclerc’s weekend-wrecking qualifying error is also discussed, as part of a wider look at the current Ferrari’s shortcomings – along with rival Mercedes’ own, different brand of performance inconsistency.
And there’s a chat about the “machine gun round” unleashed earlier in the weekend by Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi about the team’s performance in 2023 so far, and a round of questions answered from The Race Members’ Club.

What Max did on Sunday hasn’t been done since Nikki Lauda in 1984. Been a fan since 72, this young man is the best I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen them all.

This had nothing to do with strategy. Fernando also started on the mediums and extended his stint much longer than Perez. Max was simply better in every regard.

Max’s main advantage is that he’s the better driver

It's all about some type of "advantage". Any British Driver with the same race pace, they would be praising him as Goat level.

Max made the alternative strategy look like the simulators made a miscalculation and surpassed, with a 5 sec gap, Checo in the same exact car. Max's advantage was that he was simply a beast.

If all this were true, all the hard-starting drivers would have pipped there teammates which they didn’t. Max was just really good this weekend and Perez wasn’t, simple as that.

Such a joy having Fernando in Aston Martin. Hopefully he can win a race this year.

Checo was slower on new hards, than Max on old hards. It’s obvious that was the key to victory. Nothing to do with strategy

yea yea max only won because he had the better strategy right ? pathetic how they always downplay max, this channel has fallen so low man

Perez: "we need to review what happened"
Nothing happened Checo, Max destroyed you plain and simple.

Max is simply unbelievable. In my mind, the closest driver to Senna we've ever seen. The same relentlessness, the same aggression and inhuman speed. Last week's performance was unreal. Sub-par strategy and made those hards look invincible. The best driver of the past 20yrs I think.

If you look at the laptimes, Max was just like a robot. Checo could not provide consistency like Max could.

This race perfectly illustrated the chasm in ability between Perez and Max. When Max got up to second after 15 laps, Perez was less than 4 seconds ahead. In clear air, with faster tyres, and with Max stuck behind slower cars for 15 laps, he should have been at least 10 seconds ahead, and things got even worse when he put on the hard tyres, Max incredibly extending his lead on tyres 20 laps older which had also been worked very hard passing cars and being stuck in traffic. A pretty abysmal performance from Perez.

Max is the ultimate tyre whisperer, can we agree on that, at least🤔

Max had a beautiful drive especially on the back end of his stint on the hards. The difference is that if Max started P1 with no safety cars or mechanical drama he wins 10 out of 10 times.

Max was half a second a lap faster all weekend. And guess what? Apart from some street circuits, this is the standard. Max is a lot faster than Checo. We seen it already for 2 seasons but apparently we'll just ignore it.

You know damned well if it was Lewis coming from 9th to win, Scott wouldve said it was the most epic drive ever !!

The fact that Perez wasn't matching Max's lap times on new hards when Max was on 30, 40-lap old tyres says quite a lot. He was better this weekend, and for the moaners claiming sabotage or some bs a) what I just mentioned b) you don't start on hards when p1 c) both drivers were getting info as mentioned on e.g. the engine braking podcast. Perez was p1, clean air, faster pit stop and newer tyres before max pitted yet he couldn't close the gap and the rest is history🤷

For sure what Max did was a wake up call for all the dreamers thinking Perez would win a championship. Perez himself was shocked at the end there and got a massive blow to his confidence that was built up by Media and good luck so far.
