It's a good movie but absolutely nothing like the book. The modern setting shows how problems facing urban black men haven't changed much since the novel's setting in the 1930s, but the film's depiction of Bigger as a highly self-aware, educated, and sympathetic protagonist ignores Wright's entire premise in which Bigger confronts and fails to make sense of his feelings about race and identity. In the book, Bigger is violent, undereducated, woefully apolitical, arguably bipolar, prone to fits of rage and instability, not to mention existentially lost and lacking in reflexivity. In the film, he is a woke autodidact with politically subversive tendencies as well as an introspective, self-aware, and sympathetic affect. Ultimately, these positive qualities mollify Wright's protagonist for white audiences, and further detracts from Wright's fundamental ambivalence about Bigger's status as a tragic hero, to which the film seems to elevate him, but which Wright would have been hesitant to concede.

Best Novel I've ever read. I was able to sit through this movie only because I know the story. Without this knowledge, I would have been completely lost. The original story and this new depiction of Native Son, are like, Night and Day. I recommend the book

If ever there was an actor with the "it" factor, it'd be Ashton Sanders. His performances are so raw.

Idk I think the character is completely different from the protagonist in the book. Read the book first, it’s great.

He's reading Citizen (at 0:09) and Invisible Man (0:20), nice. :)
Really liked the book, looking forward to this movie! It'll be interesting to see how they update it from the '30s to the '10s.

One of the few books I read from start to finish man oh man was this a read. Interesting they chose a modern day setting for it. I feel like it would have been more interesting to me if they set it during the time period it was created in.
