Disasters and climate have impacts across the globe, but the type and severity of climatic disasters vary geographically. We will examine the impact of disasters and climate change on small islands, placing a special emphasis on extreme events in the Caribbean region.
This session will be led by Thalia Balkaran, a Postdoctoral Research Scientists at the National Center for Disaster Preparedness. Her focus is on adapting the Resilient Children/Resilient Communities Initiatives to the Small Island Context in the Caribbean. Her area of expertise includes small islands, disaster risk reduction, vulnerability, resilience, and sustainability. Thalia holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Management from the University of the West Indies.
