The thing that pisses me off is how before they changed the system I created a custom URL without having 100 subs. However since then I changed my username to something completely different, now I can't change back. Bloody annoying.

this is out of date.... the step detailed above "Move channel to Google+ account" does not exist or work anymore.
the only option now is "Move channel to Brand Account"

I wonder why YouTube changed the URL system? It used to be free for anyone but now you got to qualify, I mean I guess it's not too important to have but it would be a nice thing that have for that extra easy access

I did everything you recommended and was actually able to get a custom url. I have a different problem now. When I type in the custom url i created, i get an error saying: "This channel does not exist". Would you know how I can possibly fix this?

when I click on advanced settings it tell me I can move my account to a "Brand Account" what does that mean?

This may not be a great solution. Because this way, Google forces you to add some character after your channel name and that defeats the purpose of creating the custom URL from a branding perspective. I would like to get youtube.com/Google instead of youtube.com/Google0
