Op deze verrassend toegankelijke plaat komen in anderhalf uur tijd 19 muzikanten voorbij, allemaal meesterlijk bijeengehouden door bassist en bandleider Michael League.

Everywhere Snarky Puppy goes, the mildly curious become the manically converted; quite a feat when you consider that this Texas collective is not easy to define stylistically. At previous gigs, they mixed up their scarily tight grooves with jazz improvisations, but would just as easily incorporate elements of pop, rock, soul and hip-hop. Their past performances also include concerts with the Metropole Orkest. Of the five Grammy Awards that Snarky Puppy managed to pick up, the latest was for their most recent album Empire Central (2022). On this surprisingly accessible record, 19 musicians come and go within a 90-minute listening – all masterfully held together by bassist and bandleader Michael League.

Getting to the North Sea Jazz Festival is absolutely one of my life goals. Catching Snarky Puppy at the festival would put a big goofy grin on my face for days. Caught them once when they opened for Steely Dan, but Larnell wasn’t with them, nor was Mark.

Saw them a couple years back in a small theater and it's one of the best shows of any kind I've attended. Everyone in the band was having an awesome high energy time playing, which I don't see very often anymore. If you were sitting at that show then you were probably dead. Got some vinyl at the merch table and Michael grabbed it an signed it and did a selfie with us. I had to tell my wife who he was but he was totally genuinely geeked to be there. That guy is doing exactly what he's meant to be doing.
