Buckingham palace was bought in 1762 as a private residence for the family and it only became an official public residence for the Royal family during Queen Victoria's reign as she used Buckingham House / Palace as her official London residence . The Monarch owns the crown Estates, but signs a document that allows the government to run the estates .
