Unbelievable! This game reached its goal of $1 over the course of just 24 hours!

It also shows consumers, "wow they already reached their goal so people must believe in it, and I know it will be made and I wont be left hanging."

I remember my PoliSci professor saying that if he ever ran for office he'd get the smallest room he could to announce his candidacy in. That way the headline would talk about the "overflowing support"

I work at a board game company that does Kickstarters every so often, and I confirm this is exactly how it works, for almost every single Kickstarter in the industry.

The issue with "sensationalism" in both Kickstarters and Media is that it's exactly what people want. If the media doesn't do sensational stories, nobody reads the news. If Kickstarters don't set goals lower than what they actually need, there's less excitement. People are quick to blame companies for this kind of behaviour, but it's there because the people want it.

The way he said "sensation" gave _sensations_

There is an important-to-note degree of risk with this strategy though, in that if you hit your Kickstarter target but don't hit the internal goal that you actually needed to fund your project, you're in an EXTREMELY unfortunate place from a PR perspective.

Everytime I scroll and waste time at 4:50am and your videos pull up, I get an immense smile internally

I fell asleep and woke up to this short playing over and over again.

Now my dream about an “Indian running for 24 hours” is making a lot of sense.

Honestly this really made me think alot about some of the tricks that Kickstarter projects utilize.

It’s not just the media hype - the platforms will highlight projects that are fully funded (or at least close to) on the homepage as well. This is because people are more likely to fund a project that is definitely going to happen.
If you can get your community to pre-commit 100% of the target even better.

-making a kickstarter.
-building up hype by media and your words.
-say the game will be released much later than you thought.
-release, on steam, with a stupid price for what it is, a game absolutely unrelated to what you promised.
-make a dirty apology, excuses and dip out with your scam earn money without consequences

What is this strategy called?

This is actually what a ton of publishers also do. They help fund a big goal with funds the devs would have gotten anyway so that Kickstarter can sell it as a success story. Media outlets also pick up on that - but Kickstarter looks better if the devs actually get funded instead of running away with the money.

That is not scam, that is reputation. People know you'll make it, and recognize the great deal in front of them.

Thank you for sharing this, o don’t have enough brain cells anymore to realize things like that on my own, honestly. You make so much sense thank you

On top of that they can say they beat their goal by 10, 000%

Another party trick is to claim a record and/or achievement that is technically rare but very similar to a ton of other records/achievements (funds raised by genre/micro-genre/nationality in some amount of time) and talk about its theoretical rarity like it means anything.

I know someone who works on a website for a radio station. When it was 'trying to reach a donation goal', the progress bar was purposefully set to just below succeeding, even though they'd already far surpassed it....
