Verdi: Rigoletto from Bregenz Festival

Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpiece Rigoletto – compelling, blood-curdling and beautiful – is being performed for the first time on the Bregenz lake stage. The stage director and designer Philipp Stölzl, known for his successful productions at Salzburg Festival as well as music videos for the German band Rammstein, highlights the striking contrasts between spectacle and intimate chamber drama in his production of Verdi’s opera.

Not a Verdi fan, I caught some of this on Sky Arts and was transfixed; surprised not only by the drama, where I associate Verdi with huge set pieces and longueur, the amusing and unique lake side setting, and by the qualiity of the voices, all perfection to my ear. It's very pleasing in one's 70s to have something like this happen, and I look forward to much enjoyment. But I won't ever be a fan, as so many people are, of the heavy, pompous, traditional Verdi, but of the light, fantastical, fast moving apotheosis of voice newly discovered.
