The Bad Batch Director responds to whitewash claims

The Bad Batch had a minor backlash on Twitter regarding alleged whitewashing of the Clone Force 99 team, suggesting that they aren't following an indigenous New Zealand decent. Director Brad Rau said it was an ongoing focus for them in Season 1, 2 and 3. But according to the trailer & footage on Disney+, it looks like that isn't the case.

Can we really appreciate the fact that George Lucas in the spirit of creating diverse characters made native New Zealand characters with well over a million more on the way.

Honestly the only clones who seem to have lighter skin tone to me are Tech, Echo, and Omega. All of whom have easy explanation for why their skin tones are lighter. Omega spent literally her entire life up until we first meet her under the fluorescent lights of Tipoca City, which would result in a very pale skin tone. And from what we've seen of Season 2 it seems like she has gotten more tan since, after having a year's exposure to natural light.

We all know what happened to Echo. It's pretty obvious whatever the Techno Union did to him left him malnourished and unhealthy, which could have resulted in a loss of skin pigmentation.

Tech is the only one who's left to pure speculation. You could easily say "Part of his mutation also resulted in whiter skin" but I'm more inclined to say that because of his tendency to analyze and study things, he also has spent a lot more time indoors than the other members doing exactly that.

The other three members seem to have the similar (if not the exact same) skin tone as the other animated clones. Which is admittedly a lighter tone than Temuera Morrison's actual skin tone, but skin tones being slightly off is a thing with animated Star Wars in general. Look at how pale animated Obi-Wan is to live action. Or how much darker Bane is in TCW than Book of Boba.

honestly never noticed their skin being different to the other clones except for maybe crosshair but i assumed that was a purposeful design choice since his eyesight trait isnt as visible as the other clones mutations

As someone of both Maori and Pakeha (NZ European) heritage, I've always been acutely aware that we Maori exist in a wide range of shades and colours. Not unlike the famous Morrison family of Te Arawa, whose family surname (spoilers) isn't of Maori origin. It's a very American idea that we should all be classed according to "race" and skin colour. In the US, to be legally recognized as "native" you even need a special ID card confirming what "percentage" of indigenous you are, FFS. It's precisely thiat kind of deeply entrenched and utterly archaic societal attitude that leads to otherwise well meaning young people sparking nonsensical debates like this.

You can't convince me this was a real controversy or that many people actually cared. The Director responded to a literal nontroversy, how sad

You're telling me someone sat there and instead of trying to watch/enjoy the show they decided to nitpick at the skin tone of a character? It's not even noticeable unless you're looking for it. No one who enjoys the show is gonna really look at this and be like "Oh man...Hunter is 3 shades too light." Like dang they act like they turned him from Denzel Washington to Eminem.

When will people just be able to enjoy something without being outraged at something that isn't there?

I never really noticed. Honestly it makes sense that they're a little pale after wearing the armor all the time, and they're much older than your regular clones not to mention irregular mutations. At the end of that day this still just feels like some petty fans looking to start drama

I think this movement only got started because in the Season 1 premiere there weren't any scenes that showed the clones under normal lighting, they were either in the snow, in the white coridoors of Kamino or they were in the dark.

Also a lot of the movements most vocal advocates are saying really dumb stuff about other parts of the show; they're saying that Omega being blonde is whitewashing, they're saying that Cid is antisemetic, they're saying the batch is bad Autism rep.

So... People watched the Bad Batch and this was the one thing they took out of it? Some people today will literally complain about anything. I'd say if they asked the man himself, Temuera Morrison, if he thought the clones were being whitewashed he'd be completely sickened by such a petty question. All of the problems we face in this day and age and those who supposedly want to spread inclusivity are the ones most focused on skin color. They're obsessed... It's sad when you realize that most of the people complaining are so privileged that they've nothing better to do than complain about other's privileges.

Skin color changes depending on teh amount of light hitting it. As the bad batch, as many clones are, encased in full body armor it would make sense they would be pale

Everyone’s so infatuated over this like bruh imagine if we just acted normal and all got along.

It's a cartoon about an imaginary story with aliens. People need to find something better to do than complain about imaginary people's skin color.

I though this "white wash" was just something related to image quality, luminosity filters etc...didn't expect it would be related to their skin.

Let’s just consider, these clones almost all exclusively grew up in a pod, spent their childhoods on Kamino a dark cloudy rain world, than we’re stuffed into suits that left no part of their body exposed and wore 100% covering helmets.

Add in the advanced aging and suddenly them being paler doesn’t seem as ridiculous. Honestly the Bad Batch should get darker cause they at least get some sun on a semi-regular basis.

It doesn't really matter about the skin color, after all, it would make more sense for some/all to have a different skin color compared to the other clones because of genetic changes

I refuse to believe a significant number of people actually care or post about this.
I chose to believe these are just a handful of people they totally blow out of proportion

Typical Twitter drama BS.
Some people just want to create tension wherever possible, especially where it isn't at all needed.
Bad Batch is fine. Just because they look a bit lighter in skin tone in shining daylight, doesn't mean they are whitewashed. Lighting has stuff to say on how character's skin tone may appear.
Notice how all those "example" are pictures taken either on Kaller, which has snow and light all over the place, or in a very brightly lit up room on a Separatist ship in Tech's case.
So I say, this is just BS. Making a VIDEO talking about this BS is basically EXACTLY what these Twitter users would want. Spread their BS message further.
The Bad Bath is good enough as it is. People complaining on something as trivial as skin color, doesn't get the memo, and should be blatantly and fully ignored.

Only thing I have to say is why are we still missing the people's opinions on Twitter? Like come on already it's 2023 we shouldn't be listening to them and letting them governor what we like and don't like about a show and just let the directors do their job unless it's something that actively disappoints most of the fandom
