“When the moon is a cold, chiseled dagger.. And it’s sharp enough to draw blood from a stone..”
Just awesome

One of my favourite songs by our man - dark, brooding aural menace, genius mix of words and music. Still hoping for more work from Mr Waits - an international treasure.

Well, take an eye for an eye
A tooth for a tooth
Just like they say in the Bible
Well, never leave a trace or forget a face
Of any man at the table
Any man at the table
When the moon is a cold chiseled dagger
And it's sharp enough to draw blood from a stone
He rides through your dreams on a coach and horses
And the fenceposts in the moonlight look like bones
Well they've stopped trying to hold him
With mortar, stone and chain
He broke out of every prison
When the boots mount the staircase
And the door is flung back open
He's not there for he has risen
He's not there for he has risen
Some say he once killed a man with a guitar string
He's been seen at the table with kings
Well, he once saved a baby from drowning
There are those who say beneath his coat there are wings
Well, some say they fear him
Well, some say they fear him
Others admire him
Because he steals his promise
But one look in his eye
And everyone denies
Ever having met him
Ever having met him
He can turn himself into a stranger
Well, they broke a lot of canes on his hide
He was born away in a cornfield
A fever beats in his head just like a drum inside
Some say they fear him
Others admire him
Because he steals his promise
But one look in his eye
Everyone denies
Ever having met him
Ever having met him
Ever having met him
Ever having met him
Ever having met him
Ever having met him

If they make a Blood Meridian film adaptation, this would be the perfect end credits song

Dude's music is like no other. The instruments in the mix, fine choices👍👍.
needless to say, great writing, melody, and rhythm.

Back in the 1970s there was a very strange ensemble of musicians known as the 'Portsmouth Sinfonia', made up of musicians, most of whom could barely play their instruments or were even acquainted with the music the instruments made and had hardly any experience of playing or even practicing together.
The sound they made could be best described as a distant relative of music!
Why am I telling you this?
Because someone described Waits' album "The Black Rider" as sounding like:
'Imagine Charles Manson conducting the Portsmouth Sinfonia from a rickety pile of broken chairs'
That wonderfully vivid description sums up the strangeness of Waits' music. This is when it comes together in something of wonderfully strange but unforgettable beauty.

Everytime I look up at night and see a new or old moon I think of this song "When the moon is a cold chiseled dagger sharp enough to draw blood from a stone"

You could never call his music romantic. Only realistic. Raw

'Black Wings', Tom Waits. 'Cirrus Minor', Pink Floyd (not scary per se, but the entire atmosphere is 'unheimlich'). Some themes from Twin Peaks.

Tom Waits met the Devil at a crossroads, and stole his pocketwatch.

Only comparable song I can think of is the Doors' "Riders in the Storm." Both great songs, similar dark theme.
