Irene was awesome. And still underrated in my book. Long before the Hillbillies, she was known as, “the gal who makes Bob Hope laugh.” (She toured with his USO troupe during World War II and was a regular on his radio show for two years) She really did deserve everything she got for being Granny.

E's True Hollywood Story episode said that Max made more money from personal appearances than from the show. But one made the other possible. Supposedly many African Americans were fans of Granny. Typical of the time, we only saw any on the show. One good example was when Shorty rented out the mansion to the secretaries. That would cause problems for Mr. Drysdale. You're right. Irene Ryan deserved her fame and adulation of the fans. Too bad she didn't live longer to enjoy it and meet some of us.
