There are linear transformations where a line or a set of lines in R² maybe squished to the origin (null vector) and they may not remain line always. In such cases, you can see that the determinant is 0 which signifies that the area bounded by any two vectors before the transformation, will be zero after the transformation. Another way to say this is that the linear transformation may map the space onto a lower dimension.
