To say that Serena at that time would be ranked 700th on the tour is likely a generous estimation.
It's an extremely competitive environment, and the men around 700 in ranking are going to be as physically tough as many of the top 50-100.
To say that Serena could compete with them - possibly over 3-4 sets - is a big leap.
In Serena's own words: "Men's tennis and women's tennis are two almost completely different sports"
Even if Serena can be said to be the greatest female tennis-player ever, if we're going to erase 'female' from that sentence, it automatically calls for comparison between men and women.

How humiliating for these female reporters that they can't argue with John McEnroe from a position of knowledge because his knowledge of the sport compared to theirs is akin to comparing a bowling ball to a grain of sand. I guess they missed the interview with David Letterman when Serena Williams talked about playing against her good friend Andy Murray. She said that she would lose 6-0, 6-0 in about 5 minutes, and that she would never play him because she wouldn't want to get embarrassed. She said that Men's tennis and Women's tennis are like two completely different sports. Sometimes the truth hurts, but that doesn't make it any less true.

Why was this controversial? There isn’t even a men’s tennis league, just the BEST league that allows ANYONE, MAN OR WOMAN, to participate. The entire purpose of the existence of the WTA was that women couldn’t compete in the ATP! It would be like me starting a lesser tour because I couldn’t compete, dominate that tour, then complain that people don’t give me credit for being the best in the world! It’s so damn stupid!
