Hendrix recording backwards solo from Drifting in Electric Lady Studios

This recording is not from the tape machine of the studio but from Jimi's personal tape recorder sitting on the couch in the control room of Electric Lady Studios. You can hear Hendrix and Eddie Kramer mixing, overdubbing and talking. Extremely rare recording from personal tapes not from studio masters. I don't own the rights to the music.

Always loved the first line. “drifting, on a sea of forgotten teardrops.” I feel like Jimi was under appreciated as a lyricist.
This song never fails to give me chills!

There is something about that reverse solo when that long sustaining feedback note rings out. Always gets me glassy eyed.

Its like a resurrection, hearing a private moment from someone's life that we never would have dreamed to hear, because it was just an ordinary day and people were working, and yet here it is, 24 minutes resurrected from the mists of time.

I am 50 but In 1989 I went to Santa Cruz with my mentor. A cool draft card burning hippy. But he was teaching me how to surf and we dropped some good acid, and I'd been trying all day to catch a wave without wiping out. As my trip started to peak the sun was setting and we'd been listening to Jimmy while we took a smoke break, and Drifting was just echoing in my head. I paddled out and a nice set came in and I caught my wave with Drifting flowing in my mind and soul. I was 17 and felt like when I came through the tunnel I was in 1969 or 1970 It was beautiful. This song will always be part of me, just like I feel that Jimmy is a part of so many of us. I really miss the 70's I was a bit young but remembered it vividly. I just want to go back to the late 60's or early 70's and never return to this mess we've created... Born 15 years too late.

Jimi Hendrix was one of the most creative guitarists ever. He also was a kind gentle soft-spoken soul. Too bad the same thing can't be said about the people who control his music now

Jimi was light years away from us.The sounds he could here was from another world. We are truly blessed with his music.

This is pure gold, a step back in 1970 recording.

First heard Drifting on Cry of Love 1971 ... heard these overdubs before and loved them ... but now I'm stoned ... and adore them ... I put this audio into Reason and reversed it ... and Jimi backwards is Jimi forwards ... he could make backwards love with sound ...❤

I've allways felt that this was a symphonic arrangement, with all these overdubs making diferent voices with it's own particular timbre and melody or chords design, like the diferent instruments in an orchestra from erudite music.
For me, Drifting is Hendrix masterpiece. Pure art in it's highest level. Here he finally had touched the stars...

I could listen to hours of soothing solos by Hendrix.
I love his American Indian sounding music

Jimi Hendrix was an amazing gentle caring person.

This is also an insight that helps the listener understand just how much work it took to get to the finished song. This is an educational tool. Mr Hendrix already knew what he was going for but was open to any sound that interested him, a truly beautiful mind.

Listening to this is putting tears in my eyes, as I time travel back to that beautiful late 60s era when I was a kid in Jr. High School. I, m actually in the studio session.... witnessing Jimi hendrix's work here in 2022. that recording has amazing energy.

I've always valued hearing every note Jimi ever played, whether it's finished product, outtakes or "just jammin'" as he said during the Woodstock set. The music of the spheres just pored out of him like a waterfall. Also heartily agree with the comment below about Jimi being underappreciated as a lyricist and singer. His creativity is just otherworldly. Lucky to have him in this world as long as we did. Now Drifting from one universe to another. See you in them all I hope my friend.

I should add that Mitch totally plays some of the greatest fills he ever did in this track, really outta sight.

Wish I could smoke a doobie with Jimi. Bet he would love all this great weed we are growing now. Thanks for sharing! I have an old Fender Rhodes rotating speaker I play guitar thru. After hearing Angel as a kid always wondered how he got that sound. I even made aluminum pulleys on the lathe to slow down the rotor.

Thanks for sharing this! Jimi's studio outtakes/bootleg recordings are absolutely amazing. I wish Janie Hendrix would release all of it. Some might think this unpolished stuff might be unmarketable but Hendrix tracks like this are some of my most valued possessions

Drifting is one of my favorite Hendrix songs. Thanks for posting this interesting tape of Jimi working on it.
