Microsoft will begin rolling out Windows 11 22H2 to qualifying PCs in the coming weeks and months, but we have compiled a handy guide to get you up and running with the update now. In a recent post, the Windows Latest went hands-on with a lot of the new features coming with the 23H2 update.

Windows 11 has changed a fair amount since the release of the release version we reviewed back in October, with Microsoft rolling out a steady stream of revamped application updates, bug fixes, and user experience improvements. This week, word leaks indicate Microsoft is wrapping up work on what eventually will ship as version 22H2 of Windows 11, the OSs first annual update. Windows 11 has been available for almost a year now, with Windows 11s first major update to come out at some point over the next several weeks. Various features coming to Windows 11 were always rumored, but it is unclear what features are going to be coming to 22H2.

While the initial Windows 11 release will remain supported for at least one more year, upgrading to newer feature updates will prolong this support cycle, and even if you do not update now, eventually you will need to. That is, Windows 11 will get a major feature update every year. Unlike with Windows 11s initial launch, there likely will not be a way to make sure that all compatible devices receive the final release right away. That is, supported hardware will still see Windows 11, version 22H2, ready, the issue is the update is offered to non-supported hardware too.

The new bug effectively allows users on unsupported hardware to already update straight to the Windows 11 version 22H2, which is not even released yet. Microsoft has even accidentally released the 22H2 release for Windows 10 users with unsupported hardware, but it is not worth downloading. Recent reports from Reddit, though, suggest users on incompatible hardware are also being offered the update, including Windows 10 users. The release is not as large of a blowout as some versions, reflecting Windows 11s upgrade mechanisms, but it does iron out some rougher edges.

What Microsoft has indicated, and it is a good point, is that upgrading Windows 10 from 22H1 to 22H2 is going to be enablement pack - use small bits of code to enable the new features. Since there are not many changes in Windows 10 22H2, it should be an easy upgrade for those of us who are looking forward to the pleasant, silent, and painless feature rollout process. This more lenient timeline also means this review will not encompass every feature in Windows that is going to be a part of the 22H2 release of Windows 11 when it arrives. It is possible apps such as the new sound recorder, which is currently being previewed on the developer channel, will make their way into public hands before the 22H2 update is officially released.

As most of us know by now, there is no such thing as the Release Preview Channel for Windows 10, which gets cumulative updates before the Windows 10 General Public Release does. While build 22621) is labelled a Release Preview, it is the final release version of a software update Microsoft will be pushing out in waves to the general public. Windows 11, version 22H2, will be the basis of Windows updates over the next year. If you would like to give Windows 11 22H2 a go right away, you can sign up to the beta channel and update your system to the latest preview builds.

I can't agree more with you. I have seen systems have problems before upgrading and it's a coin toss if it makes your system worse or more difficult to fix it after the upgrade and a backup should be a legal requirement hahaha
