Welcome to my Music Theory Tutorials. In this Grade 5 ABRSM Discovering Music Theory lesson I will continue to guide you through the sixth chapter of ABRSM Music Theory in Practice Grade 5 which looks at supertonic chords (II), subdominant chords (IV), dominant chords (V) and tonic chords (I) and their inversions. This chapter also looks at cadences and choosing chords to accompany a given melody.

I have been teaching music theory for over twenty five years and I’ll help you every step of the way - just as if you were sitting next to me. I have provided free a PDF information booklet with all the information you’ll need to work through the Grade 1 ABRSM Discovering Music Theory workbook, available in A4 and US Letter.

Music Theory is an integral part of any musician’s studies. Understanding the structures behind the music we play supports our practise and performance. Even if you don’t play an instrument understanding how music is constructed helps us to be a more informed listener.

I LOVE music theory! It’s like peeling back the layers of the music to look at the nuts and bolts that hold it all together and make the music work.

Hi, I'm learning a lot from your videos. I wanted to understand a small thing around 4:30 when you eliminated Em. How did you arrive at Gmaj? Since f# is common for both Gmaj and Emin. Or did you mean Emajor instead of Emin by any chance? I got lost a little over there. Your help would be great ☺️

At 13:12, why did you put E, G, B chord of E minor? The second chord of any scale is Dim, however e, g, b chord is an E min instead E dim; shouldn't it be E, G, Bb?
