Inside a Drill + 'repair'

I had a problem with one of my small drills. And I kind of repaired it. But at least I now know how all the components inside it work.

Want to see more of me?

Enjoy the video!

I like the way you "animate" the disassembly and assembly processes.

fantastic. Giving my power tools some TLC this week and I've been stuck pouring through drill repair videos- and this was a breath of fresh air- informative, funny, and to the point. Full marks!

Your instructions were exquisite. I'm a certified international instructor and I know instructions when I see/hear them. Well done, Laddy.
I have a Rigid drill driver that experienced the exact problem you found with yours. I sent to Rigid for repair, first they said it couldn't be repaired.
I then contacted their service center and pleaded my case. They said for $40.00 they would repair it, and since I'd already paid their normal shpg chg of $18.40 which they said they credit to the bill. I returned the drill to them (recording all my ser. no. etc). I received a drill in four days. It was not my drill, surprise surprise. It looked like a brand new Go figure.

As someone familiar with animation myself I have to applaud the effort which went into animating the screws of the housing coming in and out, and it was done twice.
I know that this is "nerdy" thing that I am pointing out but details like that make this video so enjoyable.

Brave and patient man taking one of those apart and revealing the inner magic. Probably closely matched by the patients and dedication in the filming and editing. Brilliant work Marius.

That was super interesting.
I thought it was something electronic engaging for that break on my mastercraft drill because it didn't always engage, but it's probably the same thing, but sometimes doesn't engage right away. Tempting to take those pins out, I much prefer to tighten the chuck by spinning the drill and holding it!

Marius, that is one of the best videos I have ever watched! You are truly talented in many ways and have very good presence in your presentation! Keep up the excellent work and continued success in your academic endeavors! Thank you for yet another excellent video!

Sorry you couldn't economically repair it but appreciate the in depth explanation and demonstration! Very well done animation! The unlocking of the chuck hammering in the outtake was cool.

FINALY someone who agrees with me, brand names don't matter many tools are the same nowadays. Most cordless drills use the same metarials einhell, makita, AEG, bosch metabo ALL are the same just the name changes AND the price of course...

Very enjoyable video. I really like your demo of how the inner workings of the drill perform. You, sir, are a very smart young man. Don't ever let anyone stop you from getting more knowledge. As the saying goes, you can never be too old to learn something.
Thanks for sharing

THANK YOU!!!
I've been trying to dismantle a really good keyed metal chuck from an old crappy drill. The left-threaded screw wouldn't come out, but I didn't try the next part at 2:19 which is clamping the chuck in a vise with a beefy hex wrench locked in it then nailing the hex wrench with a hammer. I used a dead blow. The left-threaded screw broke and the chuck screwed off the shaft without incident, then the head of the screw simply fell out.

Now my next step is giving this old chuck new life! How? I'm mounting the chuck to a high torque gear-reduced motor, then the motor is going to be mounted as an end-of-arm tool to a KUKA KR350 industrial robot arm.

Thank you for making this video! It helped a lot and I've dismantled three old chucks tonight already!

Simply brilliant! (...but definitely not simple!) Absolutely the best explanation of the inner workings of a planetary gear set.
Thank you, Marius!

Thank you so much very help we’ll explained I’m quite sentimental with my old Mikita combi drill. I’ve had it repaired a few times but I’m now thinking of repairing it myself. The big challenge now is buying genuine parts

Congratulations, one can see your taste for learning but also for explaining. I sent it to my students to get them into planetary gears.
