Weimar - from Goethe to Gropius | Discover Germany

Weimar is known as home to poets and philosophers. 3.5 million tourists a year visit the city in Thüringen to retrace Goethe's footsteps. Among the artists who left their mark on Weimar were Friedrich Schiller, like Goethe a representative of Weimar Classicism, and the composer Franz Liszt.

Goethe and Schiller were not Classicists, they were the epitome of Romanticism, the essence of Sturm und Drang. They were the rejection of complacent Classicism and Neoclassicism. Try reading "The Sorrows of Young Werther, " or "The Wallenstein Trilogy" for examples.
