A Case For The Crusader Intrepid

While the Avenger Titan is the undisputed go-to pick for maximum play for your pay, there's more to the starting experience than just high stats. In this video, I make a case for the Crusader Intrepid and other starter ships that seem subpar.

My problem with the Intrepid isn't that it's not better than the Avenger, it's that without the sale it's more expensive than the Avenger and Cutter for a starter package, both of which can outperform it at different duties. It doesn't feel like a jack of all trades upgrade, it feels like a jack of all trades downgrade for a price increase.

A good starter ship needs to provide the player with the most varied means as possible to engage in game loops and make that early cash. It will never be all the gameloops, but if it can cover 2 or 3 its good enough. Usually that would mean the two game loops that are core - combat and cargo transport - as these two skills usually link to other loops in the future.

I really like, that your ship review is basically also a feature based video. It's diversifying the opinion pool around this ship, offers some new perspectives and raises some interesting questions regarding game play. Keep it up :)

The problem with starters is that they HAVE to be priced well, because not many people are going to buy them with in-game currency ( not that I don't, i love small solo ships ). But in general terms, a starter should be a platform to earn money to get to the next level, be it something more specialized, or a do it all like the Cutlass. as you mentionned in the video, the Intrepid doesn't stand out, it's a good ship, but only if it's offered at a good price, which currently, it isn't

If they either stuck a size 5 on there or added at least a chin turret with 2 size 1's or 2's it would sort of make sense as a small explorer due to the amenities aboard or a smuggling ship. As of now it should sit maybe at the $50-55 dollar mark or so, not the same or more as the Avenger.

You don't have to "beat" the Avenger, but you have to not be worse at everything and cost more. The Cutter isn't better than the Avenger at anything, but it's a much better option than the Intrepid. There's nothing basically "wrong" about the Intrepid now that it has an s4, but it's at least $10 too expensive. That nice interior isn't going to do anything for you for a couple years, by which time you likely will have moved on. And if you haven't? A 300 series would have been a better choice.

SpaceTomatoe does not get enough credit for the epic music he chooses for these amazing videos.

I love that there is more variety! And people who are flying it are saying great things.

I'd like to see a series of videos "all things necessary for beginners". what should they know before buying a game package. what professions are there already, how fleshed out are they, what's currently on the way and what other professions could come into the game. what starter ships pair best with which profession, how can you progress through each profession, what are your next steps when upgrading from starter ship to intermediate ship through in game play without cheesing your way through by doing drug runs or alike. what planets should you go to and why, what game loops are there and stuff like that.

I truly believe that the intrepid was purpose made for packers delivery runs. It's a very quick ship able to get around pretty swiftly, Is is great handling inside the atmosphere. And has 8 slots for boxesThere can be access from the outside of the ship. As well as the inside. It's not meant to be a combat ship it's meant to be a speedy run about and I think it handles it pretty well now that I've had a chance to fly it a little bit. And in my opinion package delivery is the best thing that a new player can do to get his feet wet in the universe because it teaches you a lot of the basic systems in the game. Piloting landing take off. Different environments that you have to go through how Access bases. And of course how to use your quantum travel system to quickly get around. The fact that gun is an afterthought is probably because it was an after thought

People are forgetting that even for those of us with large fleets, we're still going to need soloable ships so everyone is going to need some sort of starter when things reset. I love my intrepid, fast, gets in and out of atmo, i can log, and use it to grind merc bunker rep

The Intrepid's segmented cargo lifts are ideal for small munitions and supply deliveries, probably best suited for the small boxes (I think they're called 1/8 SCU boxes?). Ships like the Aurora are more like scouting ships, while the Mustang is a fighter with light cargo for bringing goods to the front line. The 100i actually feels more like a delivery van with it's ramp entrance and small interior, and the Intrepid is basically just a step up from that if you think about things too much like I do. Being able to use your size 4 (or size 3 gimble) weapon to smack back on anyone your size, deal with pirates on the ground, or even target an incoming torpedo coming at you makes sense for this ship. It is a delivery truck that you can live in, and once these delivery missions start getting better about the SCU sizes, you'll be able to make some good credits off of this ship.

Of course, the current playerbase is comprised of a lot of PvP players, but I think every player should have a ship that they can just sit back and take in the beauty of this wonderfully crafted galaxy we have in the game. This ship might just be that for some, if not for it's beauty, then maybe for it's practicality.

for 5 bucks more you get the 325a... a beautiful looking and very capable ship with great speed, fire power, a bit of cargo and beautiful interior that can even be customized.

The Avenger Titan is so good because it’s literally just a middleweight fighter with a bed and walkable cargohold effectively tacked on.

The problem with the Intrepid is that it is worse than the Avenger Titan in nearly every way, but costs more. It has worse pitch/yaw/roll rate, is slower in every metric, has half the shield HP, deals much less DPS, has fewer missiles, and is physically larger. They have the same 8SCU of cargo, but the Intrepid’s method of holding said cargo is jankier, and ultimately less practical. None of the non-aesthetics criticisms I’ve seen have been demanding power creep. People just want a given starter ship to actually be competitive with its peers. And if it’s destined to be *worse* than its competition in so many ways, it should cost less. It’s brutally simple.

And in classic Star Citizen fashion, a lot of the Intrepid’s balance issues demand remodeling. Want a bigger shield? Too bad, they’re going to have to rework the interior to accommodate it.

It can't beat the Titan in any metric performance wise, but it's more cozy, the interior is better. It should have been at worse priced the same, but it's not

In regards to the weapon, since it is a S4 mount it can mount the C-788 which currently has a range of 6525 meters, also since it's a singe mount it's not trying to deal with convergence across multiple weapons so it should be fairly consistent aim wise when trying to target infantry and objects on the ground.

in order to store the mirai pulse you need to ride it inside then look up at the cargo close lever and raise the cargo floor before getting of the bike

Great points! My first ship long long ago was the 315p. It's fast, has panoramic view, and has plenty of cargo for a starter. I knew I wasn't into combat to start with, so that was fine, but definitely limiting or impossible there once I did want to try combat. So great points about emotions playing into the starter vessel more than anything - the discovery / explorer ship is what I chose, though the gameplay in that area seems extremely limited at the moment.

As an illustration of how new players will find a ship, I was a watching a Loud Guns (or maybe it was SMB) video trying to decide if I wanted to buy SC when I saw a Cutter (with what I now know was the Noble paint) fly past in some stock footage and I instantly fell in love.

I think the Intrepid was also planned as a starter to launch alongside engineering in 4.0 before the features were delayed
