Honey I’m 62 & cook on cast iron daily since I was 10. I use cast iron pans that are from the late 1800’s & early 1900’s all Griswald Wagner & lodge (1950’s) . These cast iron was made in Ohio both companies bought out by lodge. I’m guessing your pans were not completely dry when you stored them. Now the sticky oily residue is from spraying your pans with non stick Pam or avocado or olive oils. Use Lard or Tallow even crisco only & grease the pans & lids up really good. You can use soap if necessary. Once you start using these they will be nonstick & stay beautiful. I don’t cook acidic foods in mine. I have every size made. I have 3 complete sets to pass down to each daughter & granddaughter. Thanks Becky for sharing. GOD BLESS from Central Indiana Farmland

I bought 12 cast iron pans at a yard sale a dollar each. I figured if I messed them up it was only 12 bucks. I covered them in vinegar and wrapped them in plastic wrap overnight. In the morning, the plastic wrap was dark brown, so I thought I ruined them, but they were almost perfect. I washed them off with vinegar and did it again overnight, and they were perfect. 100s of dollars in cast iron pans for 12 bucks and vinegar and plastic. Best yardsale find ever.

I've been cleaning/restoring my cast iron for 50 years. I use SOS pads to scrub the rust off. It takes very little time. Then wash them with dish soap. Then use them to fry bacon. The lard restores cast iron. I've pulled rusty cast iron skillets out of barns, yards and so forth. They always look like new when I get done with them.

When she said I've just ignored them. I stayed to watch the video because it's videos like that. That people do the things they've been ignoring and work on restoring. That really gets you a true subscribing. Dedicated fan, been watching for a few years now. Becky, watch to blossom into a mother. Homesteader, and you give me the daily oath to get off my butt, and do the things that need doing

Take the vanilla beans that are left over from infusing the sugar and freeze dry them and powder them. Then you have vanilla powder that you can add two baked goods especially if you have something that you don't want to mess with the liquid ratio like a macaron or meringue.

If you are storing the pans in your propane oven, that could be the source of your rust. Propane and natural gas put off a water vapor when used. The pilot light might be exposing them to moisture over time. Love your videos!

You did a great reseasoning of your skillets. The sticky buildup comes from oiling your pans and placing them back in the oven right-side up. This causes the oil to pool on the bottom. Heat oiled pans upside down so any excess oil will drain off pan instead of pooling which then turns sticky. You were busy, busy, busy on this video. 😊

We live in western North Carolina in a gorge. We get gale force winds a lot. We often have power loss. A whole house generator was one of our first purchases. It saved us when Hurricane Helene hit this area. We had internet when no one else did and the power to run it. We had over 50 neighbors who were able to communicate with family and make evacuation plans. Two other couples moved in with us. Since we had a well, we were in good shape for the month we were without power and city water. You will be happy you made this purchase.

i have truly loved watching this channel grow and thrive. i hope you never forget how truly deserving you are of all the success this channel has seen. the time and effort you put back into your channel is so inspiring and fun to witness and does not go unnoticed. even when i feel like i havent done enough in a day, watching you simultaneously do and complete three huge projects at once makes me feel some sort of secondhand accomplishment even though i have never even cooked on cast iron lol thank you for being you, becky!

Hi Becky, thought I’d let you know the correct way to store those cast-iron skillets now that they’re clean. To protect your cast iron skillets when stacking them, always place a layer of paper towel, newspaper, or a dedicated cork spacer between each pan to prevent scratches and absorb any moisture that could lead to rust; essentially, never stack cast iron directly on top of each other without a barrier between them.

I’m 72 and my grandmother taught me to season my cast-iron skillets with lard or tallow. I’ve only had to re-season my skillets twice in all my years. First time was when younger, my then husband didn’t know you couldn’t, soak, wash with soap and water and let air dry. Second time was when my grandson soaked my pan overnight in water because he had burnt something. I scrubbed them down and re-seasoned them with lard. Just FYI when you put your pans in the oven to season, turn them upside down, you won’t get the sticky buildup inside! Also to protect pans when stacking them, put thick cardboard cut to fit inside to protect them.

Always turn them upside down when you putting them in the oven to have the aces oil drop off! You’re amazing girl! You do so well as a wife and housekeeper

Becky, I leave my mill on counter at all times it’s my kitchen decor along with my beautiful mixer. Those machines run my kitchen they deserve a place of honor.

Hey Becky! The reason people back then said no to soap is because dish soap was made differently! Anything that uses lye, like traditional soaps, will cause them to oxidize (aka rust), but liquid soaps like today's traditional dish soaps aren't made using saponification, so it's okay to wash cast iron with it as long as you follow proper care instructions after.
