Jeddah Tower - the highest building with a difficult fate

The Jeddah Tower (Burj-Jeddah), also known as the Kingdom Tower or the Mile-High Tower, is the project of the tallest skyscraper in the world, the spire of which was to overcome the mark of 1000 meters. The construction is being carried out near the city of Jeddah on the Red Sea coast in Saudi Arabia.

The skyscraper was supposed to be the tallest and one of the most complex structures ever built. The building should become the center of a completely new area with a population of more than 80 000 people. However, financial and political difficulties led to delays and the actual freezing of the project of the building and the whole city for a total value of more than $70 billion.

I honestly really have no bloody clue when this tower is going to be finished. Honestly, it may very well be scrapped, and then be several years before and ironically the entire project starts up all over again. It’ll be like that pyramid tower in North Korea that never got finished. The Creek Tower on the other side of Saudi Arabia in Dubai does look particularly beautiful though. Can’t wait to see that one finished.

The main difficulty of continuing to build the tower is that it was meant to be the centerpiece of an entire city district built from scratch, and without that district the tower stands alone. There is absolutely nothing nearby, just a vast and sun-scorched empty plain. Beyond that plain there are some resort hotels and low density residential areas, but Jeddah proper is an hour away by car. The tower needs the district to function, and the district needs a crazy amount of money to come to fruition. Whoever wants to complete the tower also needs to complete the city around it, and the expense would be tremendous while the income would be uncertain. Even with the tower and district completed, Dubai would be a strong competitor, and even that city isn't doing very well at the moment.

I lived in Jeddah doing the 1980's and learned to scuba dive in the waters of the Sharm Obhur, which is directly adjacent to the new tower. The area adjacent to where the tower is going up, was pretty sparsely populated in those days. There were a lot of marine fossils in the ground there, especially a particular species of extinct sand dollar. I'm sorry to see it all paved over. But that's what the Saudi's do. Saudi arabia may have been conquered by the Al Saud, but they have always had to rely on foreigners for all of their technology. That's just how it has been for most of the last 100 years, and how it most likely will remain for another 100 years, unless they can get around their stiff necked pride and learn that engineers etc are the people who build countries, not managers and bureaucrats.
