London based Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist, Dr Paul Jenkins MA BChir MD FRCP, gave a talk about Modern Management of Hypothyroidism.

Recorded at The Thyroid Trust Information Event at Crown Court Church, Covent Garden, London, on Saturday 13th April 2019.

The Thyroid Trust is a patient-led charity for people affected by thyroid disease, including friends, family and interested professionals.

After qualifying with a degree in Medical Sciences at Cambridge University, Dr Jenkins undertook his clinical training at The Royal London Hospital. He worked at the internationally renowned Department of Endocrinology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, where he gained unrivalled experience in clinical endocrinology. After completing his MD research degree he was appointed as Senior Lecturer and then Reader in Endocrinology and Honorary Consultant Endocrinologist. For over 10 years he also led the Endocrine service at Homerton University Hospital. Within the Medical School, he was Dean for Pre-Registration Doctors and an enthusiastic teacher of undergraduate students across all years. Widely published he has been awarded numerous academic grants for his research and lectured extensively in the UK and abroad on his findings before establishing the London Endocrine Centre where he is the Senior Consultant.

He has a particular interest in disorders of the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands, as well as diabetes. He has also developed considerable expertise in the diagnosis and management of chronic fatigue. He firmly believes in taking a holistic approach and involving patients in their care, for optimum treatment.

This event was chaired by Lorraine Williams, Director of The Thyroid Trust and includes some information on the advocacy work The Thyroid Trust and our partners have been engaged in to influence availability of liothyronine, L-T3, on the NHS in the UK.

Dr Jenkins reads from a recently produced information leaflet at the end.

See our website for further details including a copy of the leaflet which you can show to your doctor and latest guidelines for hypothyroidism in general and liothyronine in particular.

Let us know if you are experiencing difficulties or frustrations with your care.

You're not alone with thyroid disease.

Glad that person asked why it’s still even possible for nhs doctors to treat thyroid patients so badly and how they can get away with repeatedly ignoring them and not investigating their symptoms and then if they do, not ordering the extensive testing required to rule out every possible explanation. It’s barbaric and has to stop before any other people lose any more of their lives unnecessarily.

Wow thank you Dr Jenkins and The Thyroid Trust… Hopefully with more listening to patients and understanding thyroid disease, things can improve for the 10% of patients that don’t respond on just thyroxine T4 alone…

This is great - so glad to hear and interested Endocronologist! What would Dr Jenkins suggest to a patient on how to get a referral or see an endocronologist that might prescribe T3 on NHS? Most of us unfortunately can’t afford the cost of private treatment.
