Tetris (NES) Playthrough [Nintendo version]

A playthrough of Nintendo's 1989 puzzle game for the NES, Tetris.

This video shows both game types and all of their endings. The A-Type games begin at 0:17, and the B-Type games begin at 21:56.

(The final B-Type ending at 41:28 is especially great with its cameo appearances of all of Nintendo's major mascot characters! I never would've pegged Samus as a cello player, nor Bowser as an accordion man.)

But while Nintendo's port of the game is, ironically enough, not as good as Atari's, it is still an excellent cart that managed to hook millions of players. The fun music, the simple yet addictive gameplay, and a boatload of cameos by classic Nintendo characters all made it the perfect game to chill with, and its vibe resonated with everybody, elementary school boys and technophobic grandmothers alike.

And does anyone else remember those crazy commercials Nintendo ran nonstop during the 1989 holiday season? Like the ones with the Russian cartoon bears and the opera singer? Hahaha, man, how times have changed.

This is the only video game my mom loved. I would wake up in the middle of the night, stand at the top of the stairs looking down and see her in the den in front of the tv playing Tetris. She was really good too. She still brags to me that she was better than me at this classic.

This is one of those classic soundtracks that has lived rent free in my head since the 80s...

With Tetris Forever approaching, playing the classic is a good idea.

The music is just so simple but iconic at the same time.

Nintendo's Tetris is a bonafide NES classic, even if it isn't the best version of the game for the platform.

The sheer impact that Tetris' success had will never cease to amaze me. It led to countless other puzzle games being made like Puyo Puyo or Panel de Pon, it led different *_versions_* of Tetris like the Mickey Mouse or Cardcaptor Sakura ones, and it has led to a documentary on the game itself as welll as many pop culture references. Tetris isn't just a fun puzzle game. It is one whose charm can never be matched and is a defining part of all our lives no matter what version we've played (The Sega Genesis one, in my case lol).

If you want to see some crazy stuff, delve into the classic tetris world championships. they START on lvl 18 and in recent years with new playing techniques like hypertapping and rolling players have gotten to insane levels and scores. Like to the point that they had to institute a level cap, so you have to score as high as you can before you reach that cap, because players could just keep going and going. The speed doesn't pick up past lvl 29, so if you can play perfectly at those speeds then it can get ridiculous.

This game was on my mind a lot during the 2018 World Cup. Especially cuz the adidas 2018 Telstar and the jersey fonts were inspired by Tetris and Minecraft.

Although the N64 version is the best Tetris in my opinion, the NES alongside the Game Boy's releases defined the series.

That music is so 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 1. Hip Tanaka composed both games, so of course.
