They're still made, and are pretty cool. I use the Esab handy 200, sadly you can't fit a 5mm rod in it...

Lenco LT-250/400??? They don't make em no more??? Better stuff mine in the bottom drawer for occasional use. You're right tho, it'll crush a rod. I like to kinda bend the rod as I tighten it and then rotate down light off
