1. Use Saturation for bringing out color/ vibe/ details/ analog feel/
2. Apply subtractive EQ 'after' saturation to first affect the whole frequency spectrum and remove unwanted frequencies afterwards.
3. Using different saturation plugins (Saturation/ Distortion/ Exciter/ Bit crusher/ Tape Emulation/ Console Emulation/ Guitar gear Emulation/ Any other that comes to mind), gives different results. Experiment and apply to your taste.

You should level match the output of the saturation, because the gain alone that happens will allow your ears to here more detail in the sound and cause it to sound better even without the saturation.

I always knew saturation was a highly respected and admired aspect of the mixing process but hearing the difference between no saturation and with saturation has made me consider what my first plugin should be for it.
