Notch Gear Hats: Genius design or just a gimmick? | EDC

Don't miss anything from Factor 85 Labs!

I bought a Notch hat a couple years ago sort of on a whim, because I thought the design looked cool, and not because I had any sort of issue with my sunglasses and hat colliding. I have a big head, and most hats don't fit low enough to cause any issues. That first hat didn't really do anything for me, and I felt a little silly for buying it just because I thought it looked cool.

Then I was wearing my prescription glasses at work one day, and had to drive a long distance. I am pretty sensitive to bright light, so I had my hat pulled down low, and if kept pushing the frames down, and my glasses kept digging into my nose. And that is when I realized that Notch hats are a brilliant design.

These hats aren't for everyone. But if you have ever pulled on your hat, and them been irritated and had to push your glasses back up, these might be the hats for you.

Factor 85 Labs is about sharing the things I enjoy, in a practical way that works for dads and families. Everyday is an experiment, and I am sharing what I am learning about practical ways to balance my interests and hobbies with the everchanging life of a dad with small kids. DIY, EDC, cooking, reviews, first aid, whatever the day brings, I figure out what I think is a practical approach, and share that with you.

I wear glasses and always thought this was a gimmick but you got me looking at it and I realized that it's not a problem for me because my glasses are small. if I had larger frames then I would have this issue and that notch would solve it. It's not a gimmick it's just that not everyone has this problem.

(After two months). Very well explained! I really like the Notch Flexfit range hats with the “no-button” at the top. Better for headphones.

And I buy these hats notchless! Why? Because I can’t get the notches to line up with my sunglasses, and I’ve tried both notch locations on the bill of the hat.

So my workaround has been to change to rounder, lower profile glasses. Now, lots of clearance, no fighting between eyewear and headwear! All is well with my Notch hats!

I always hated wearing caps because it always pushed down on my prescription glasses. I came across the Notch caps and wow! So much better now. Wearing a cap is no longer uncomfortable.

I actually discovered that this was a problem before I went looking for a solution, and found these hats. I've ordered some and look forward to trying them. Caps pushing on my sunglasses have bothered me for years. Hopefully this is the solution

Wow, same thing happened to me! I wear prescription sunglasses, so the Notch range hat didn’t work for me. I didn’t know about the other notch option, farther forward. Will try this, thanks!!

one thing nice about their athlete hats is if your wearing ear pro over you don’t have that knob at the top which is an uncomfortable pressure point

Well this is helpful! I saw this and i was more looking at them for use with my glasses (big plastic frame ones) that i wear all the time. Glad i decided to get the Terra Notch ones.

If you don't wear glasses, the notch provides windows for peripheral vision

I imagine they're perfect hats for folks that have to wear heavy duty glasses for a living

I ordered the wrong notch. Now it all makes sense

an alternative is just cutting out slits in a hat and sewing them back up
