Grizzly Bear Catches Fish in Mid-Air

We spent two days in the Katmai National Park, located in Alaska, watching Grizzly Bears - aka Brown Bears - catching salmon at Brooks Falls. There's a great viewing deck where people can watch the show. We arrived on day 1 praying to get this scene on tape and got it 5 minutes before we had to leave on day 2. It was a bit of a miracle. The park ranger on duty said she thought it was the first mid-air catch of 2011. Unfortunately we didn't get the name or number of this particular bear, but he must be a regular because he really knew what he was doing. Thanks to Kulik Fishing Lodge for a great trip! The bears weren't the only ones who caught fish on this trip.

Goes down to eat, bird gets close. Looks up, bird increases distance. Very smart and tactical bird.

I've been to the great barrier reef over there on your side of the world and had a great time there. There's some pretty terrific nature right there in your corner of the world for sure! But if you're looking for recommendations for places to go in Africa just let me know and I'll try to respond. If you are looking for a great read check out Peter Allison's books about being a safari guide. He's a fellow Aussie who had the travel bug!

Salmon it is. Swimming upstream to spawn.

That's great! It looks like you've done your fair share of globe trecking as well. I'm an Australian and wanting to do nature documenting and videoing around the world.

There are many different kinds. Not sure about the sushi part though. Atlantic Salmon are much different then the salmon in the Alaska. Salmon also look different depending on life stage. I believe the Alaskan Salmon get red only when they are going to spawn. Don't quote me on that though. Do a quick image search for salmon on Google, you'll see all the different kinds that are out there.

I don't, but I would love to. :) Maybe a second career. I have been lucky enough to get some of my videos on some Nat Geo shows though. Hope you enjoyed my videos!
