Fire and Advance allows line infantry to approach an enemy steadily while maintaining fire. This makes it a useful way for infantry to close a gap before engaging in melee combat. However, their volume of fire is not as great as Fire by Rank and (in some circumstances) Platoon Firing. In addition, the infantry spread out, which increases the chance of friendly fire if they are standing abreast to other units and takes precious time in the middle of a firefight.

Fire and Advance does not work against most cavalry including horse and camel riders. Instead, the first rank of infantry fire, followed by sporadic firing. However, Fire and Advance is still utilized against elephants.

Fire and Advance is available only to Line Infantry and their equivalents.

The point of Fire and Advance is to give cover fire and suppress the enemy when you need to advance, maybe to take a defensive position, like a hill or fortification, of course the causalities will be high, but lower them just rushing in. This tactics is still used today as bounding overwatch. Because there is no suppression in the game, this tactic is kind of useless, but I still use it for fun. Platoon fire is also to keep the enemy suppressed, so the enemy can't exploit your reloading time to fire and take cover.

After 1 cycle they reshuffle, and worst of all, the line that just fired last has to fire again now, meaning everyone in the back is standing around uselessly waiting for the frontlines to finish loading.
If this formation didn't mess up the spacing so bad, skipped the reshuffle, continuously rotated lines instead of making the 3rd one fire again and if it ended in an automatic charge once the distance is closed this formation drill would be very useful and fun to play with.
The way it is is shit.

i'd always finish the 3 shots with a charge like with napoleonic column tactics

It's good you fought militia because there's no way fire and advance would work against proper line infantry.

Why is everyone complaining? They won and closed the distance without ever needing to stop firing. You can use this to fix an enemy while still effectively advancing

Looks like an obsolete tactic provided that it's used with very few ranks. I believe if you're using at most 3 ranks you should be doing standard fire by rank, and only if you've got many regiments of line infantry to use fire and advance if you also have multiple ranks available.

Looks like other ranks still reloading while next line was able to shoot, looks like it does save a littlebit of time on firepower output compared to a standard reload.

Straight up useless. Pretty much always better off ordering the men to sprint to the new location especially if the unit is still fresh.

The only time I could see it being slightly useful is against canister shot as it spreads out the formation but even then you’re better off just ordering a bayonet charge.
