A slightly more detailed guide: Start with the 2006 anime by DEEN, then to Kai. Afterward, you might want to watch Rei, specifically episode 2-4, or Saikoroshi-hen. Then read Umineko in either manga or visual novel form (optional) then to Gou and Sotsu.

A better alternative to watching the anime is to read the manga adaptation or read the visual novel. The anime cut a lot of information from both. Also, you might also want to watch/read Outbreak, an OVA by DEEN which takes place in another world after Matsuribayashi-hen, which might help you know more about a specific character in Umineko

As someone who watched the show almost a decade ago including Rei and Kira, i still think at least episodes 2-4 of Rei and episode 4 of Kira are essential to close off the series.

I haven't watched Gou or Sotsu yet, so I'm not sure how well they'd fit there, but i still think at least those four OVA episodes should be included. (The rest can burn in a fire lmao, *especially* both episode ones)

I have only seen Gou, but my personal headcanon is that Sotsu doesn’t exist and that the second arc of gou is canonically the first to occur and it loops around into the first episode and it ends with *that* scene with Rika and Satoko and disembowelment that I was not mentally prepared for

As you say dont watch the anime please play the visual novel. I only play onikakushi and watanagashi and tatarigoroshi is nearly finished but its an absolute fantastic thing which no anime can compare. And the first game is for free on steam so you dont lose anything if you try👍🏻

yeah this is only if you can find them. i was basically forced into watching the tenth season first because that is the only one i can actually find anywhere unfortunately. at least i don't mind spoilers ig.
