On Monday, 16 February 1998, the Airbus A300 jet airliner operating the flight crashed into a road and residential area in Tayuan, Taoyuan County (now Taoyuan City), near Chiang Kai-shek International Airport (present-day Taoyuan International Airport), Taiwan.

All 196 people on board were killed (including the governor of Taiwan's central bank, Sheu Yuan-dong, his wife, and three central bank officials[4][5]), along with seven people on the ground. Hsu Lu, the manager of the Voice of Taipei radio station, said that one boy was pulled alive from the wreckage and later died.

During this time, the pilot had pushed the yoke forward and the plane's autopilot was disengaged, but was not aware of it, so during the go-around, he did nothing to actively take control of the plane, as he thought the autopilot would initiate the maneuver.

I’m from Taiwan and this was just so horrifying. The crash site was less than 10 kilometers from where I live now and my family and I all saw the news about this crash on TV. At that time, reporters just directly showed how the plane crashed into residential buildings and there were fire, wreckages, rubbles and body parts all over the crash site. It was so frightening and some people had to go to the doctor because of seeing such a scary scene. 😢

Story: earlier my teacher told us that 20+ years ago her friend won a prize to go to another country and was going to ride this plane but the host (i think) changed the destination since there was a better place so they rode on another plane and missed the crash of their real flight

This crash is just as almost the same as China Airlines Flight 140 about 4 years ago. in fact, it is almost similar in everything: both are A300-600R owned by China Airlines, both are having large quantity of people on board, both are on final approach at night, both are suddenly go-around which led to deep stall and crash to the ground. And ofc, both are caused by pilot error, which make me wonder long time ago: did China Airlines learn anything from Flight 140 when Flight 676 crashed?
