This is because of an upward force acting on the base of clay from water know as upthrust or bouyant force. If the clay is in lump form it has small base hence the gravitational force will exceed the upthrust and caly will sink, but if we'll mold it in a boat shape its base will increase hence upward force will have larger area to act on and hence clay will float..(PS:-I'm a medical student but still has this concept in my mind)

Here because of large S.A. upthrust increased that's why the apparent weight is so small and it is floating (Acc.to me) 😊
