A part you left out is that even though some of the actors "looked terrifying", some of them genuinely tried their best. The actor who did the Unknown was a 16 year old girl fun fact so this was most likely her first ever acting gig. And from what I saw and heard the Oompa Loompas were genuinely nice and tried their best to cheer the kids up. And it seems it worked well as some pictures showed. Also:
