Today we take a closer look at the 1971 Mercury Cougar XR7. This was the first year for the second-generation Cougar, replacing the original that started in 1967. This new car was longer, more luxurious, and featured the largest engines offered by Ford/Lincoln/Mercury. AMCM's Owner, Mark Pieloch, covers this original XR7, including the model's history and the rarely optioned factory sunroof.

Awesome!! '71 last year for big block. Sequential rear signals still graced Cougar through 1973. Tbird too, had These signals in '71. But that was the nd of cool blinkers on Thunderbird. Have had 5 (71-73) cats. Love them. 351C power!! Your 429 CJ so cool!! My Mom had two 1972 Cats. Med brown, XR7 hardtop. Med lime metallic XR7 hardtop 2bbl. Brown one she totaled in Wisconsin winter, , had Q code, C6, Dual Exhaust . Med Ginger XR7 leather/vinyl beautiful interior. That's how I got hooked on Cougars.

Awesome. Wish there was more to this video though. Like what rear end it has, the sequential turn signal gear(super important to Cougar folks… fixing my 68’s took forever) and some other stuff.

We had a white on white convertible, with the 351 V8. it was such a head-turner and a joy to drive in the summer. Not terribly fast, but for the late 1980's and what people were driving during then, plenty quick. I still think it was a great looking car, and can only vaguely remember why it got beyond affordable maintenance. Maybe it was a disciplinary move by the head of our household to drop it. Thanks

The 71 and 72 front end look better to me than the 73 front end . Still good looking car though .
