They DEFIED Rome - The Kingdom of Epirus

The Kingdom of Epirus, located in the northwest of Ancient Greece, was known for its beauty and rich culture. Its main city, Dodona, was famous for the Sanctuary of Zeus. Inhabited since the Hellenistic era by tribes such as the Molossians, Thesprotians, and Chaonians, Epirus expanded its influence under the Molossian dynasty, descendants of Achilles. Its interactions with Macedonia shaped its politics and aristocracy, while the Pyrrhic Wars with Rome exemplified the cost of hard-fought victories. Despite initial independence and strategic alliances, Epirus was ultimately incorporated into the Roman Empire in 167 BC, leaving a lasting historical and cultural legacy.

Actually in 332 BC Alexander of Epirus uncle of Alexander the Great led an army into Italy at the request of the Greek city of Taras. He made a treaty with Rome and then proceeded to attack the Italic nations of the Bruttians and Lucanians who heavily defeated and killed him at the battle of Pandosia. So the Epirotes made 2 attempts at victory in Italy and both failed. Could have been mentioned that Pyrrhus had elephants an animal the Romans hadn't seen before.

There is a misconception that the Romans won against the Greeks due to their "flexible legion, " the magical "pila, " and generally superior Roman weaponry and training compared to the Greek "inflexible phalanx." This couldn't be more wrong! Unfortunately, most authors and readers confuse the imperial Romans with the Republican-era Romans. Romans surpassed Greek military gear and technology in the 1st century AD. When the Romans confronted the Greeks, the Greeks had superior body armor, superior discipline, and superior military technology like catapults. Greeks were superior in almost every sector of the military. They had professional soldiers (Republican-era Romans were not), heavy cavalry (cataphracts), light cavalry, horse archers, archers, slingers, and ballistas (gastraphetes). Romans were superior in only one sector: they could master and train armies one after the other.

While Greeks were separated and fought among each other, they never succeeded in creating an alliance to face the Romans as they did against the Persians. The Greeks regarded the Romans as just one more barbarian group they had to deal with. They never saw them as a real threat, neither the Romans nor the Carthaginians. That's why Greeks easily took up arms against the Romans in open field battles with smaller forces, and guess what? They prevailed! Romans started to gain the upper hand only when allied Greeks fought with them against other Greeks. This is a fact that is rarely mentioned, though ancient authors wrote about it!

The turning point during battles when the Romans stopped being beaten by the Greek phalanxes wasn't due to their maniples, flexibility, or magical pila, but rather due to the critical intervention of allied Greeks!

If we are victorious in one more battle with the Romans, we shall be utterly ruined!
